YOUR FRASER FIR TREE CARE GUIDE
We’ve included some post seed germination care tips to help ensure strong and healthy growth of your Christmas Tree.
Fraser Fir
(Abies fraseri)
Height: 3m (10 years) – 15m mature
Position: Sun or semi-shade and moist, well drained soil.
Post sowing seeds
Once you have sown your seeds place the pot in a warm and sunny spot. Follow with gentle watering, keeping the soil moist. Avoid making the soil too wet. Depending on growing conditions you should start to see the first shoots after three to five weeks. However, germination can be slow and erratic and may take a few months. Continue to gently water and keep the soil moist, particularly during the summer months. After one year your new Fraser Fir seedling should grow to a height between 2 and 5cm.
Re-potting
At the end of your tree seedling’s first full year we recommend transplanting into 7 to 9cm pots using a general potting compost. You can continue to watch your seedling grow indoors, or in the spring, once all risk of frost has passed, can be moved outside.
The seedling stage
This stage lasts from 1 to 3 years, depending on growing conditions. During this time, your seedling lays the groundwork for future growth. As they develop, they transition into the vegetative growth phase, where their potential really begins to unfold.
Vegetative growth stage
During this phase your Fraser Fir tree experiences a remarkable transformation. They rapidly increase in height and width, developing a distinctive Christmas tree conical shape. In good conditions your tree can grow between 30 to 60cm per year. Your emerging tree can be pruned to shape as they grow. This phase lasts anywhere between 3 to 20 years, depending on its environment. Soil quality, moisture levels and sunlight exposure are key elements to accelerate growth.
Planting outside and thinking long term
Carefully consider your outdoor planting location. Within 10 years your tree should be around 3 metres tall. The perfect size for outdoor Christmas tree decoration. A mature Fraser Fir can reach 15 to 30 metres in height, showcasing a striking conical shape adorned with dense foliage.
